Ciao Molo,
immagino che il protocollo Nmea a cui ti riferisci sia il 0183.
Il Gps vedo dal manuale che esce con NMEA 0183 ver 2.0 sui fili shield/yellow (schermatura/giallo).
Il Midland non saprei dove li riceve perché non hai specificato il modello.
Sempre sul Gps c'è un menu di configurazione:

Configure NMEA
You can configure the unit to use specific NMEA sentences.
1. Press MENU|MENU|#8595; to SYSTEM SETUP|ENT.
2. Press #8595; to COMMUNICATIONS PORT|ENT|#8595; to CONFIGURE NMEA|ENT.
3. a menu appears showing the prefixes of the available NMEA sentences.
a check mark next to a prefix means the prefix is in use. Use #8593; #8595;
#8594; #8592; to select a prefix, then press ENT to turn off the prefix. (Press ENT
again to check the box and turn a prefix on.)
4. When the desired prefixes are checked or unchecked, press
EXIT|EXIT|EXIT|EXIT to return to the previous page.
Immagino che fin qui tu abbia già fatto tutto quindi così a occhio sembra un problema di settaggio del vhf. Impostalo con gli stessi parametri che hai usato su Hiperterminal, poi eventualmente prova a scambiare i due fili.
Se non risolvi prova a scrivere qui quello che ricevi con hyperterminal per capire meglio se sono sentenze Nmea corrette.
